Statement on Anti-Racism and Anti-Colonialism

On January 27th, CUSA Council passed a motion to develop a statement on anti-racism and anti-colonialism. Acknowledging the persistent legacies of colonialism embedded in our society and the rise of racist rhetoric in political and social spheres, the Carleton University’s Students’ Association condemns all kinds of systemic racism and colonialism, ratifying its support for anti-racist movements and anti-colonial advocacy. We recognize the harm these practices cause to marginalized communities in our student body and on an international level. As a student organization committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion, CUSA stands in solidarity with movements such as Black Lives Matter and Indigenous sovereignty efforts. In addition, we affirm our commitment to challenging racism in all its forms.

We recognize that anti-racism and decolonization must be central to our advocacy work. Carleton University offers a variety of resources such as the Equity and Inclusive Communities Department, and the Centre for Indigenous Support and Community, which provide support, education, and advocacy for students impacted by racism and colonialism. These resources aim to foster an inclusive campus environment and to empower marginalized communities. CUSA is committed to amplifying the voices of all BIPOC students through promoting decolonization efforts, as well as much support as we can to our student body.
