On Wednesday, November the 6th, members of CUSA’s Advocacy Team (Ana Clara Miranda Guimaraes, Aidan Kallioinen, and Artur Estrela da Silva) met Chad Collins, Member of Parliament for Hamilton East–Stoney Creek, and National Housing Caucus Chair. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss new approaches to help students save for a first home.
The delegation discussed CUSA’s proposal for a Canada Student Loans and FHSA Contribution scheme, whereby a current student or recent graduate, looking to pay down their loan, would receive a contribution towards an FHSA when they do so.
CUSA believes this proposal will help eliminate the barrier of student debt, typically associated with buying a first home. Many graduates cite issues paying off their student loans as a primary reason for delaying home ownership, according to a report by the Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA).
CUSA hopes to champion this innovative proposal and help more students afford a place to live when they leave university. The meeting was productive, and we look forward to an update from MP Collins’ office.
