“Dedicated to lifelong learning”, BECAMPS strives to assist non-traditional students in the Carleton community who often have jobs and family alongside academics on their daily ‘to-do’ lists. It is our goal to ensure that every student at Carleton has the opportunity to gain access to resources that meet their individual academic and personal goals. We understand that students who are returning to their studies after a period of time, those with family and career obligations have different needs and face different challenges than full time students. BECAMPS is dedicated to providing educational support services, student study space, a safe child-friendly play area, and advocacy campaigns throughout the year on things such as the differential treatment and lack of government funding and grants available to part-time students.

Volunteering

Volunteers of the centre participate in a variety of ways. Many staff the centre to keep it open to suit the diverse schedules of this student base. This volunteer effort ensures that
the centre is open almost every hour of the day, every day of the week!

Volunteers also facilitate the development of event ideas, and their implementation. In addition they provide input for advocacy campaigns surrounding issues including ageism, childcare, and barriers placed on part-time student’s accessing education funding.

History

BECAMPS was preceded by a club called the Carleton Association for Mature and Part-Time Studies. In 1996 students showed their support by voting for the establishment of a new service centre to help these students. The centre was named after English student Bill Ellis who graduated with a Masters of Arts from Carleton University at the age of 91. Bill’s example of lifelong learning continues to provide inspiration for Carleton’s growing mature and part-time student body.

Resources

BECAMPS offers a variety of resources for the campus community. There is an ever-expanding library, a computer with internet access, a phone for on-campus and local calls, as well as a refrigerator to store your lunch for the day, a microwave to heat it up, and a sink to do your dishes! We also keep a kettle and coffee maker nearby for those desperate student caffeine fixes (although we usually have Rooster’s Coffee at our events). There are also extra plates, Tupperware and plastic utensils if you’re a fan of the G-Spot and in need of some tools!

We also have a separate area just for kids!! There is a padded floor area with LOTS of toys. There is also a highchair in the centre and a changing table across the hall for ease and accessibility! Let us know if there is something missing that might benefit the centre!
